1. Introduction


A 30-year-old pregnant woman referred for the evaluation of fetal arrhythmia to our Fetal Echocardiography Laboratory. The following images were obtained. Based on the fetal echocardiography, what is the diagnosis?


2. Answer


The fetal heart rate is 297 beats per minute [supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)], and there is accumulation of fluid in the plural and abdominal cavities. Consequently, the fetus is suffering from hydrops fetalis.

3. Comment


Hydrops fetalis is found in about one per 2000 births and is categorized as immune or nonimmune hydrops. Cardiac arrhythmias, especially SVT, flutter, heart block, and Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome are among the important causes of nonimmune hydrops.
